Mandarin tutors from all over Wales came together in Cardiff last week for a lively and forward-looking training day to share ideas, refresh classroom approaches, and build connections across institutions. Hosted by the Cardiff Confucius Institute, the event offered a full day of workshops and discussions focused on practical, creative ways to support Mandarin teaching in a variety of school settings.

One of the standout sessions was led by Houxing Zhang, an experienced tutor from Ï㽶ÊÓƵAPP’s Confucius Institute. Her workshop, Inclusive Chinese Teaching in Multicultural Classrooms: Cross-Curricular Lessons and Cultural Connections, encouraged participants to think deeply about how to make Chinese language learning relevant and inclusive in British primary schools. Drawing on her knowledge of both the Chinese and Welsh education systems, Houxing guided tutors through comparisons of classroom structures and introduced fresh ideas for cross-curricular lessons that promote cultural understanding. The session left attendees feeling inspired and equipped with practical tools to bring more diversity and creativity into their teaching.

Throughout the day, tutors also explored a wide range of interactive teaching methods and digital tools, all designed to boost student engagement and help learners connect with Mandarin in meaningful ways.

Tutors from Bangor, Cardiff, and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David shared experiences, swapped tips, and supported one another in open, friendly discussions.
