About This Course
This short course offers an introduction to the foundational topics of law, providing students with a broad understanding of key legal areas such as criminal law, contract law, human rights law, and international law. It is designed to give learners a solid grounding in the basic principles and concepts that shape legal systems and influence the way society functions. The course begins with an exploration of the nature and purpose of law, examining the various sources of law and the differences between common law and civil law systems.
Students will then explore specific criminal law concepts, learning about crime classifications, legal defences, and the trial process. The course also covers the essential components of Contract Law, focusing on how contracts are formed, enforced, and breached. Human rights law is introduced by examining fundamental rights and freedoms, exploring how international frameworks protect human dignity and address violations. Lastly, the course explores international law, discussing its principles, sources, and the role of international organisations such as the United Nations. By the end of the course, students will have a foundational understanding of these critical areas of law, preparing them for further study or for applying basic legal principles in various fields.
